Projects supported by the Byas Foundation

Over the years, many achievements of Hope Hospital have been supported and funded, in part or in whole, by the Byas Foundation. These are summarized below.

2016 — The pavilion named MEDICO quarters the hospital’s public health services and the meeting and training rooms. The Foundation financed the renovation of it’s roof while the Catholic Medical Mission Board (CMMB) financed the finishing works at the second floor to upgrade its usefulness. Also, as in 2015 the Foundation paid for medical supplies so to help the surgical mission held in January and financed the salary of the head nurse in charge of the CTC.

2015 — As the cholera epidemic is not yet eradicated, the Foundation financed this year again the salary of the nurse heading the hospital’s Cholera Treatment Centre (CTC). Secondly, the Foundation paid for an inventory of medical supply (bandages, disinfectants, surgical gloves and masks, fuel for the electric generator) so to help the surgical missions accomplished by the French medical team of “Les Amis de Soeur Madeleine et d’Haïti”. Finally, an amount of $8000 was urgently required to clear the fees for the hospital’s new ambulance bonded at the Haitian customs. Then an amount of $4000 was necessary to urgently overhaul the two electricity generators. Financing both emergencies at a total cost of $12 000 was possible because that money was first available to renew the roof of the hospital’s pavilion called MEDICO. That less urgent project was then put off till next year.

2014 — Since the incidence of cholera has decreased in Haiti, the World Health Organisation stopped funding the hospital for it’s Cholera Treatment Centre. But the epidemic is not yet eradicated and the hospital still receives an average of forty (40) patients a month. This is a crippling financial burden to the hospital. So the Foundation, this year, supplies the salary of a head nurse at the Cholera Treatment Centre. Alongside to this support, the Foundation also funds a major and urgent repair of the porch of the nun’s residence and will finance the replacement of the Emergency Room’s electric batteries.

2013 — Over the last decade, the number of beds increased from 80 to 91 while the number of employees climbed from 75 to 145. In the past, three sisters of the Holy Cross managed the hospital but now, management has to be increased. In less than ten months the hospital hired a medical director, a chief of medical care, a chief of laboratory and a manager of human resources. Therefore the hospital has to acquire the basic furniture (desks, chairs, file cabinets, computers) for the newly arrived personnel. Furthermore, the hospital is always determined to serve its population as well as possible. The waiting area for the Emergency Room had no roof and patients had to wait under rain or sun. A shelter is needed for those patients.

2012 — A year ago, electrical circuits were installed in the Maternity ward. And a gynecologist is now full time at the hospital. Therefore it is now possible to update the maternity health services. So the Foundation financed the acquisition of an ultrasound scanner, a fetal monitor and other electrical devices for a total sum of $25,000.

2011 — Since the hospital was overloaded with patients during the cholera outbreak, it could not plan any modernization project. Therefore, the Foundation dedicated this year’s contribution to the hospital’s Community health service in all of the eight rural sections of Pilate.

2010 — The hospital’s original buildings now date half a century. Understandably, the metal parts of the windows need to be replaced for the windows to recover their full use. The Foundation paid to replace those metal parts.

2009 — The hospital’s expansion has lead to increase its water consumption. Since the hospital’s management team is conscious of the link between environment and public health, it expressed the need to dispose safely of its waste water. Therefore, the Foundation has helped finance the installation of a main sewer leading to a settling thank followed by a waste water treatment.

2008 — The hospital is located uphill, alongside of the village. The hill is rather steep. In 2004, hurricane Jeanne had damaged the concrete road, called Montée de l’Espérance, that leads to the hospital’s gate. Abundant rain in the following years made it urgent to repair that concrete uphill road, which was entirely financed by the Foundation.

2007 — With the development of the hospital many new professionnals are coming to Pilate to work temporarily at the hospital. In this context, the Foundation has contributed to the expansion and the development of the residence of the hospital’s professional staff.

2006 — The Foundation contributed to expand the hospital’s laboratory and financed the building of two counseling rooms necessary to apply the World Health Organization’s program to fight HIV/AIDS.

2005 — Byas Foundation helped finance the complete replacement of the roof at the hospital’s main building.

2004 — Torrential rain in Pilate brought by hurricane Jeanne washed out the soil under a section of the wall surrounding he hospital. Byas Foundation financed the urgent repairs to assure the hospital’s safety.

2003 — In order to implement a program designed to stop propagation of HIV/AIDS, the Foundation contributed to the asepsis of the operating room, including ceramic tiles on the floor and on the concrete walls.

2002 — To help the hospital to get securely rid of biomedical waste, the Foundation financed the construction of an incinerator. The Foundation also contributed to install an air conditioner in the operating room.

Le dortoir2001 — The Foundation has received a total sum of $14,000 of which $4,300 were raised through an annual mail campaign. This fund raising campaign has permitted the hospital to build a dormitory to shelter those who have walked long distances (from 4 to 6 hours) to bring, or to carry on a stretcher, a relative or a friend at the hospital. It should be noted here that there is no accommodation of any kind in Pilate.

2000 — As an example set to stop deforestation in the Valley of Pilate, a consequence of making charcoal for cooking food, Byas Foundation financed the conversion of the hospital’s kitchen to gas stoves.
